Parking and Campus Map:

The event is at Skaggs Building at University of Montana campus. Permits are not needed, and parking is free, however, please read signs carefully at each lot for any restrictions in the lot you choose. If you feel like walking, you may park at the overflow parking in the DoubleTree Hotel and walk using the walking bridge adjacent to the hotel.

Provisions: 

Provisions include a light continental breakfast both days including coffee, lunch at the business meeting. 

Accommodations:

There is a lot going on in town this weekend so book early. We had to work with several hotels to be sure you had lodging, so please book soon.

1. Best Western Plus Grant Creek Inn. Please ask for the MT Physical Therapy Assoc Room Block, rate is $129. Cut off date for these rooms are Sept 9 but the block is expected to fill up early. Call 188-543-0700.

2. Staybridge Suites. 406-830-3900. Please ask for the MT Physical Therapy Assoc. Room Block, rate is $119-139. Cut off date for these rooms are Aug. 23 and the block is expected to fill up early. The classic apartment-style studios feature modern furnishings, and offer full kitchens, sofas, workspaces, free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. There's also 1- and 2-bedroom suites, which add living rooms with pull-out sofas. Complimentary amenities include a breakfast buffet, an airport shuttle, a gym and an indoor pool with a whirlpool tub. There's also a pool table and a cozy lounge with a fireplace.

4. Holiday Inn downtown does not have a block but will offer rooms at $179 based on availability only. 406-721-8550. Ask for the MT Physical Therapy Association rate of $179.

5. There are many other hotels in the Missoula area, including Come On Inn and LaQuinta, amongst others, on Reserve Street.

Cancellation Policy

MAPTA reserves the right to refuse/cancel an event registration. If MAPTA refuses a registration, registrants will be offered a full refund.

Registration Cancellation by Participant:

  • Cancellations will be accepted in writing via fax, email, or mail.
  • A $25.00 administration fee will be withheld when cancellation occurs up to ten days prior to the start of the event; 50% refund if cancelled 2-10 days prior; 25% refund if cancelled 0-1 day prior.

Group Discounts:

10% Discount for 3 or more APTA Member PTs/PTAs from one clinic. Fees for all persons must be made with one payment. No exceptions. Course description: 

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the most commonly injured ligaments of the knee. The recovery and treatment of athletes following ACL reconstruction is perhaps the most highly studied area of physical therapy practice. As such, it is challenging for clinicians to stay up-to-date in best practices and tools to improve patient care. This course is organized with a heavy emphasis on a practical and clinically relevant interpretation of the existing base of evidence. The instructor’s goal is to share and interact with the audience to move towards a central goal of clinical excellence by doing the right things right. Each lecture is designed to incorporate the best contemporary literature to change your practice to the state-of-the-art in patient care. Course presentations are designed to provoke discussion and stimulate new creative thinking on the future of how patients will be treated in the years ahead. While the course is focused on patients with ACL injury and reconstruction, there will be clinical pearls to help the rehabilitation of patients with other knee conditions. For instance, many of the compensatory movements, instructional cues, and treatment techniques have carry-over to patients and athletes with other knee disorders besides the ACL. Additionally, the examination and outcome assessments have wide-ranging utility in patients who are recovering from lower extremity injuries.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe how anatomical structure and biomechanical function of the knee is involved in the mechanisms of injury to the ACL as it relates to injury prevention and enhancing dynamic knee stability.
  2. Utilize evidence based techniques for enhancing strength outcomes and speed of recovery for patients in rehab for ACLR.
  3. Utilize reliable and effective assessment tools to gauge patients’ progress in rehabilitation for the purposes of documenting physical therapy success and influencing patient prognosis.
  4. Describe published practice guidelines for ACL reconstruction rehabilitation and identify the chief residuals deficits in current patient outcomes.
  5. Describe the likelihood and risk factors associated with development of knee OA following ACL reconstruction and how treatment choices may influence long term patient outcomes and joint health.
  6. Identify the clinical utility and limitations of common physical impairment measures (e.g. pain, weakness), patient-reported surveys, and performance-based tests used in clinical-decision making schemes after ACL reconstruction outcomes.
  7. Describe known deficits in biomechanical and psychological measures following ACL reconstruction and how they can impact ACL reconstruction outcomes.
  8. Enhance their clinical reasoning and decision-making by incorporating biomechanical and psychological measures into published practice guidelines as modeled by the speaker during patient case presentations.

About the Presenter

Ryan L. Mizner, PT, PhD is an Associate Professor at the University of Montana in the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science.  Dr. Mizner is a Montana Native who completed his undergraduate training at Montana State University with a degree in Exercise Science – Biomechanics.  He finished his MPT and PhD in Biomechanics and Movement Science at the University of Delaware.  Dr. Mizner’s current teaching responsibilities are biomechanics, physical therapy management of knee, and electrotherapeutics.  General outpatient orthopaedics is his area of clinical practice and he continues to treat patients and mentor in residency programs. He has 30 peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Physical Therapy, JOSPT, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and the Journal of Rheumatology. These publications have been cited by other scientists over 2000 times in the past 10 years. He has been an author on 70 research presentations with published abstracts at national or international meetings and has co-authored a book chapter on treatment of knee disorders.  Last year, he gave featured invited presentations at both the Combined Sections Meeting of the APTA and the Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine that were focused on the clinical utility of biomechanics in clinical reasoning in patients with ACL reconstruction. His research has been financially supported by the Foundation for Physical Therapy, the Orthopaedic Section of the APTA, and the National Institutes of Health. His past honors include the Margaret L. Moore Outstanding New Academic Faculty Award from the APTA, Outstanding Faculty Merit Awards from both the University of Montana and Eastern Washington University, and as a Finalist for the New Investigator Award from the Orthopaedic Research Society.
