About the course:

Morning TOPIC: Therapeutic Neuroscience Education: Know Pain; Know Gain

Afternoon Topic: A Pain Science Approach to Treating Headaches

Course Description:

MORNING: This class is designed to update attendees on the latest evidence and understanding pain neuroscience and how to clinically apply the information utilizing therapeutic neuroscience education to patients. The field of neuroscience has advanced our current understanding of pain from peripheral and central mechanisms that can modulate nociceptive and non-nociceptive information to alter and modulate an individual’s pain experience. The class will review the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of a pain experience and the various modulations that happens during transduction, transmission and perception from the peripheral nervous system through the central nervous system. We will also explore the bigger picture of pain and the various output system responses during acute and chronic pain conditions and their relation to physical therapy evaluation and treatment. We then will take all of this neuroscientific information and apply it to patient care using therapeutic neuroscience education and other therapeutic interventions for individuals in pain through stories and metaphors. Therapists will learn basic concepts of how to explain pain to patients and alter behavioral responses to assist them through their pain experience during therapy. If you treat patients that have pain this class is a must.

AFTERNOON: This class will blend the use of manual therapy and exercise with current pain neuroscience information for the evaluation and treatment of patients with headaches. Research in the pain science realm has lead us to take a more modern view of the manual therapy and exercise techniques utilized for decades and re-conceptualize how they apply for people suffering from headaches. This class will look at the primary classification of various headaches and explore evaluation and treatment options for each within an evidence based framework. We will explore the various inputs into the pain neuromatrix coming from the cervical spine and other related areas that can affect the output of pain for many individuals. We will explore the manual therapy techniques and exercises that may be most beneficial for headache patients and the research supporting or in opposition of them. The attendees will also learn pain neuroscience education stories and metaphors to help patients understand why their headache isn’t all in their head. For clinicians that treat people with headaches this course is a must to modernize your treatment approach.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course attendees will be able to:
  1. Compare and contrast the biopsychosocial model to a biomedical model of care to patients with pain.
  2. Understand the basic neuroscience of pain through transduction, transmission, processing, and modulation as relates to current best evidence
  3. Develop skills and techniques to provide pain neuroscience education to patients in the clinical setting
  4. Classify various headaches based on The International Headache Classification (ICHD-2)

  5. Understand basic underlying causes behind various headache types

  6. Explore the various manual therapy, exercise and pain neuroscience educational interventions for treatment of each headache type
