Cancellation Policy

MAPTA reserves the right to refuse/cancel an event registration. If MAPTA refuses a registration, registrants will be offered a full refund.

Registration Cancellation by Participant:

  • Cancellations will be accepted in writing via fax, email, or mail.
  • A $25.00 administration fee will be withheld when cancellation occurs up to ten days prior to the start of the event; 50% refund if cancelled 2-10 days prior; 25% refund if cancelled 0-1 day prior.

Group Discounts:

10% Discount for 3 or more APTA Member PTs/PTAs from one clinic. Fees for all persons must be made with one payment. No exceptions. Credit will not be provided at a later date.

Lifetime Member:

About the course:

Dizziness and Balance Issues in Persons Post Concussion and with mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Sue whitney, DPT, PhD, NCS, ATC, FAPTA

Course Description:

The course will provide an overview of the most recent evidence related to post concussive disorders and brain injury.  The instructors will provide physical therapy case examples of persons with concussion/brain injury presenting with varying degrees of impairment in order to provide the learner with a breadth of exposure to the complexities involved in treating persons post concussion/traumatic brain injury.  All cases will incorporate the latest evidence related to management including diagnosis and intervention.


Course Objectives

By the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Become familiar with the latest research and guidelines related to concussion and brain injury related balance and dizziness issues

  • Understand the key components of balance and vestibular assessment in patients with brain injury

  • Gain exposure to treatment cases that illustrate concussion/brain injury with co-morbid vestibular dysfunction

  • Gain of an understanding of latest advances in balance assessment in concussion/brain injury 

  • Understand the role of ocular motor abnormalities in the evaluation, prognosis and management of the concussed/brain injury population

  • Learn how to perform the Vestibular Oculomotor exam (VOMS) with children and adults post-concussion

  • Recognize concurrent vestibular issues often seen with TBI/concussion such as migraine, Meinere’s disease, perilymphatic fistula, anxiety and BPPV

  • Gain experience in the examination of ocular motor function 

  • Participate in viewing videos of unusual eye movements and their interpretation

8:00-10:00—Latest advances, research and guidelines for concussion/mild head injury

10:15-12:00—Vestibular and Balance Evaluation (including Lab)

2:00-2:45—The vestibular ocular motor screen and concussion evaluation

2:45-3:30—Cases and Practical applications for treatment

3:45-4:30—Video analysis of eye movements

4:30-5:15—Treating the athlete - what is critical to know

About the Instructor

Susan L. Whitney, DPT, PhD, NCS, ATC, FAPTA 

University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh PA, USA.

Dr. Whitney received her professional physical therapy education from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. She received her doctor of physical therapy from Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of the Health Professions. Currently, she is an associate professor in physical therapy in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and in the Department of Otolaryngology in the School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh. She is the Program Director of the Centers for Rehab Services (CRS) Vestibular Rehabilitation Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Whitney practices physical therapy one day a week for CRS. She currently studies the use of vibrotactile feedback in persons with vestibular dysfunction. She has published over 110 papers that are referenced on Medline and has written over 30 book chapters, primarily in the area of functional balance assessment and vestibular rehabilitation. She has co-wrote a book entitled “Vestibular Disorders: A case study approach to diagnosis and treatment”. She has clinically worked in out-patient and long-term care, acute care, and rehabilitation for the past 30 years. Dr. Whitney is past President of the Neurology Section of the American Physical Therapy Association,  was a member of the BPPV guideline task for of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery and the APTA vestibular hypofunction clinical practice guideline.  She is a professor in the Departments of Physical Therapy, Otolaryngology and in Clinical and the Department of Clinical and Translational Science at the University of Pittsburgh.
