About the course:

Course Description

Therapy services in every setting continue to be highly scrutinized by Medicare, Recovery Auditors and even private payers. The regulations and guidelines for therapy services are complex and difficult to interpret. Moreover, the interpretations of how to apply the regulations vary. Over the past two years, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has overhauled the payment method for almost every setting in which PTs and PTAs work. Understanding these changes and how they impact a therapist’s expectations and responsibilities in the workplace are critical to success.

This course will assist the participant in navigating and applying the rules and regulations. The participant will also learn about recent changes affecting therapists in all settings: the Merit‐based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), changes to the skilled nursing facility and home health agency’s prospective payment system, maintenance therapy, value based models, and medical reviews. The course will also inform participants of how quality of care is becoming a bigger driver of payment across the spectrum, and of course how documentation of services relates to all of this.

Target Audience:

Physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, billing personnel

Course Objectives:

  1. Identify the most recent changes to therapy services payment and how business practices might be impacted
  2. Discuss the most recent policy and payment landscape including fee schedules, Tricare, the therapy cap exceptions process, health care reform, and quality‐based payment systems for therapy services in all settings.
  3. Interpret the role that quality measurement has in physical therapy services.
  4. Apply the most current documentation regulations and how to implement them in daily practice.
