Details for Course 2:

Physical Therapy as the Profession-of-Choice for Dissemination of Falls Risk Assessments and Individualized Fall Prevention for the Community-Dwelling Older Adults of Montana

DESCRIPTION:  This four-hour continuing education course is the cornerstone to effective and thorough dissemination of evidence-based falls management practices for the PT profession utilizing a public health approach. The CDC has endorsed one fall risk assessment tool, the STEADI, and four fall prevention programs (Otago Exercise Program, Matter of Balance, Stepping On, and T’ai Chi Moving for Better Balance) for national dissemination. Physical therapy is the perfect profession to lead this charge and engage the challenge proactively. This course will prepare attendees to perform the STEADI and assist local primary care practitioners in its adoption and use in their practices as well. Attendees will also learn how to incorporate the Otago Exercise Program within one-to-one physical therapy treatment and discharge plans to improve patient compliance and outcomes. Identification and referral of appropriate older adults to each of the fall prevention programs, as well as information on offering these programs, will be discussed. Following this session, attendees will be able to apply for inclusion in the CDC’s phConnect, on-line falls prevention community. These programs provide a very effective addition to marketing of physical therapy services in many settings while providing highly valued community service.

OBJECTIVES: At the completion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Appreciate the demographics, cost, incidence, and risk factors involved with falls in the community-dwelling older adults of Montana and the U.S.
  • Understand the major risk factors and the need to look beyond balance and strength in our efforts to decrease fall risk in older adults.
  • Learn how to administer the STEADI fall risk assessment and respond with appropriate interventions and/or referrals.
  • Learn how and why to incorporate the Otago exercise program as part of a comprehensive physical therapy program aimed at falls reduction.
  • Examine the similarities and differences of the 3 community-based, group-delivered, falls prevention programs and how to select and refer the appropriate older adults to each program.
  • Accept the charge to learn, support, and disseminate these programs in your local area.
