Introduction to Barral Visceral Manipulation

Synopsis: This course demonstrates the importance integrating of Barral Visceral Manipulation into a Physical Therapy Practice. The focus will be on the musculoskeletal system, but that is just one of the systems of the body that Visceral Manipulation will assist.

According to French Osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral, Developer of Visceral Manipulation, up to 90% of musculoskeletal problems have a visceral component. An integrative approach to evaluation and treatment of any musculoskeletal dysfunction requires assessment of the structural relationships between the viscera, and their fascial or ligamentous attachments to the musculoskeletal system. Viscera move like the musculoskeletal system in 3 dimensions. A ligamentous and fascial support system attaches them to the posterior wall of the body. If there is tension in the ligaments, there will be tension and compensations in the back body wall and throughout the body.

All viscera have physiological motion that relates to normal pain-free movement; so knowledge of this is essential to see patients within an integrate

Course Objectives:
  • Discover how Visceral Manipulation assists functional and structural imbalances throughout the body including musculoskeletal, vascular, nervous, urogenital, respiratory, digestive and lymphatic dysfunction.
  • Learn to evaluate and treat the dynamics of motion and suspension in relation to organs, membranes, fascia and ligaments.
  • Understand how Visceral Manipulation increases proprioceptive communication within the body, thereby revitalizing a person and relieving symptoms of pain, dysfunction, and poor posture.
  • Learn evaluation techniques to uncover primary restrictive patterns.
  • Learn common Visceral-Somatic pain patterns that will benefit your treatment of patients.
  • See first-hand how to integrate Visceral Manipulation into treatment sessions, and why without it, treatment sessions may be incomplete.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Ann Ryan is a physical therapist with 35 years of experience in a variety of collaborative practice settings including private, institutional, and corporate.  She holds BS in Physical Therapy (Indiana University) and Doctor of Physical Therapy  (Rosalind Franklin University) degrees as well as multiple certifications for practicing and teaching visceral manipulation techniques.  Dr. Ryan currently owns and operates her own successful private practice in Minnesota where she focuses on manual therapy for the treatment of difficult to resolve conditions such as chronic pain, headaches, and neuralgias.
