About the courses:

course 1: An Introduction to Motivational Interviewing: Skills for helping patients make healthy choices

Course Description:

The demands of the current health care system include the delivery of high quality, patient-centered care. And, more and more, payment from third parties for care of patients is tied to demonstrated achievement of clinical and patient satisfaction outcomes. These expectations are especially challenging given that many of our patients are complex, with multiple co-morbidities that compromise their health and often lead to disability. Chronic diseases account for seven out of the ten leading causes of death and 75% of the total health care costs in the U.S. In Montana, fifty-eight percent of adults have at least one chronic condition and 33% have two or more. Particularly troublesome is that most of these conditions are due to or exacerbated by life-style choices that people make.

The purpose of the presentation is to introduce the audience to Motivational Interviewing (MI), an empirically supported, patient-centered counseling style. A case will be made that physical therapists are well positioned to have a productive impact on the choices patients make through strategic communications that can lead to changed patient behavior and improved health outcomes The course will include an overview of MI principles, and provide the participant a chance to practice key elements of the MI approach. The participant will also be provided various resources that will allow for developing improved patient rapport and psychologically informed physical therapy. Links between MI and other widely used models and philosophies in PT practice and education will also be explored.

Course Objectives

Participants will:

1. Describe the spirit, principles and application strategies of Motivational Interviewing

2. Understand how MI is philosophically consistent with modern physical therapy education and practice expectations.

3. Examine opportunities for integrating MI and other psychologically informed strategies into their practice.

4. Appreciate the need for advanced training in MI
