COURSE 2: Comprehensive Stabilization Strategies for the Low Back, Pelvis & Hips -Teaching Postural Control & Optimal Movement Skills

Course Description:

While a step in the right direction, recent research suggests that improving muscle activation patterns alone (aka core strengthening) is not the one stop shopping solution we initially thought it would be when it comes to treating low back pain. This course blends existing core stabilization principles with the emerging Regional Interdependence realities to advance our understanding and treatment of low back & hips issues, while advocating for a more patient-centered and individualized approach to corrective exercise. We will move beyond origin/insertion thinking using integrative movement principles that address hip/lumbar mobility & instability issues thoracic mobilization & focal strengthening with simultaneous lumbar stabilization. Principles of Specific Motor Control Exercise (SMCE) follows from a thorough understanding of these regional relationships and addresses them in a way that makes our exercise mimic the specific motor behavior we are trying to influence. The movement sequences are built around the functional contexts of sitting, standing, bending, lifting and walking. This helps our patients with both skills acquisition (strength and flexibility) and with application of functional lumbar stabilization during ADLs. The Dynamic and Static Integration principles are well defined and contrasted in a relaxed and thought-provoking environment. Come experience this fun and interactive approach to studying movement that introduces ways of making the exercises we prescribe more informative, more functional and much more effective!

Course Objectives

By the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Recognize regional relationships; hypermobility/hypomobility pairs both locally and globally; semi-predictable hip muscle antagonist imbalances and how they affect directional lumbar instability; thoracic organization and implications for lumbar compensation; perception/re-calibration and maintenance of neutral back.
  • Distinguish Static Integration and Dynamic Integration exercise by characteristics; cardinal plane vs multi-planar movement; arms/head move from a statically stable trunk vs with a dynamically moving trunk; pelvic influences from waist and hip muscles.
  • Pinpoint long-term habitual movement and postural mistakes and correlate to specific lumbo-pelvic repetitive stress injuries; low back/SI pain, labral or piriformis syndromes, femuro-acetabular impingements, hip bursitis/tendonosis, joint degeneration/THR, hip fractures and more.
  • Utilize teaching techniques that make exercise more "informational" reciprocating movements, use of constraints, change of venue, goldilocks principle and link to functional context.
  • Specify your exercise prescription to optimize motor control; individualizing your exercise approach thru analysis of Global and Differentiated movement patterns and specific muscle synergist coordination locally, regionally and globally.
