About the course:

Course Description:

There has never been a more important time to understanding correct coding and billing in physical therapy including key documentation elements to support the codes billed. An increasing number of insurance audits, Medicare Targeted Probe and Educate audits and OIG investigations in outpatient therapy illustrate the importance of this topic for physical therapists.

There is a good amount of misinformation about this topic including myths that persist. Who follows Medicare rules? Who doesn’t? What’s the difference between the total treatment time rule and the midpoint rule? What time counts for timed based codes? What’s the difference in Therapeutic Exercise and Therapeutic Activity? What am I required to do every 30 days – or is it just every 10 visits?

These questions and more will be answered in this course. You will leave with a clear understanding of correct coding and billing and a clear understanding of the most confusing Medicare regulations for physical therapy. Join us to get your questions answered and the myths dispelled.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, each participant will be able to:

  • Compare the principles of accumulated time (total time) vs incremental time.
  • Articulate 3 key concepts in the introductory language for the physical medicine and rehabilitation CPT codes
  • Articulate the 3 factors that determine payment under RBRVS
  • Distinguish between the requirements for low, moderate and high complexity evaluation coding
  • Articulate the requirements for billing a re-evaluation
  • Articulate the difference between untimed/supervised and timed/constant attendance CPT codes
  • Distinguish between the requirements for timed and untimed codes
  • Distinguish between the midpoint rule and the Medicare total treatment time rule.
  • Articulate the key elements for the 6 most commonly used timed CPT codes utilized by physical therapists.
