Perinatal Care for Physical Therapists: Master Class

Presented by Dr. Sinéad Dufour PT, PhD

4 Contact Hours, MT category A

You may watch this at anytime between now and July 30 for credit. This is Part 1 of a 2 part series. You may sign up for one 4 hour course or for both. $20 discount if you register for both courses.

About the course:

Course Description:

The perinatal care period represents an important time when women need support. From trying to conceive, to understanding how to optimize their health and function through pregnancy, to being empowered to birth and recover well….it takes a village! Physical therapists are well-positioned to enact a key role to support and care for women through this time to improve health outcomes. To do this, a systems biology and health promotion care approach is needed.

This short course is designed to better prepare PTs for working with this population, including all outpatient therapists, even those not specialized in pelvic health but who see patients in this population. Dr. Dufour will provide an overview of evidence informed care considerations for pre-natal and post-natal contexts. Specifically, the following topics will be covered in depth:

  1. Physical therapists’ role in fertility – no this is not just for pelvic health PTs!
  2. Translating best practicing guidelines to optimize birth and pelvic health outcomes.
  3. Diastasis rectus abdominis – often frustrating but actually rather straight forward.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss relevant literature related to fertility, pre-natal health promotion and post-partum recovery with an emphasis on diastasis rectus abdominis.
  • Justify rational for appropriate and evolved care in the antepartum stage to enhance health outcomes post-partum.
  • Apply current evidence-informed care principles to best leverage a physical therapists scope of practice through the perinatal care period.
