Provisions:

Provisions include coffee/tea in the morning and lunch at the business meeting. Snacks are not served at breaks.

Business meeting and elections will be held at noon on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at the CE site. Lunch is included for those registered for the course. Please RSVP if you are not registered (you may register online for this without paying). Please send agenda items to the office or President Emily Herndon by Sept 16, 2023. Final agenda will be posted in the members only section at www.aptamt.com by Sept 27, 2023.

Cancellation Policy

APTA MT reserves the right to refuse/cancel an event registration. If ATPA MT refuses a registration, registrants will be offered a full refund.

Registration Cancellation by Participant:

Cancellations will be accepted in writing via email or mail. A $25.00 administration fee will be withheld when cancellation occurs up to ten days prior to the start of the event; 50% refund if cancelled 2-10 days prior; 25% refund if cancelled 0-1 day prior.

Discounts:

Group Discounts:

10% Discount for 3 or more APTA Member PTs/PTAs from one clinic. Fees for all persons must be made with one payment. No exceptions. Credit will not be provided at a later date. Combining discounts (ie Lifetime AND Group) is not applicable. If you need to take advantage of this, call us for a group code to pay online, or mail in your check with participant names.

Student Discounts:

Students may take any non-limited seating, APTA MT sponsored CE at a rate discounted by 75% of the member and non-member rate; If the course is a lab, students will be admitted on a space available basis only. Group Code: APTAStudent (your registration will be cancelled if you are not a student using this code).

Lifetime Member:

Lifetime members may take any non-limited seating, APTA MT sponsored CE at 50% discount. Combining discounts (ie Lifetime AND Group) is not applicable. About the course:

Course Description:

Lifestyle medicine uses the power of the everyday choices we make and daily actions we take in the areas of nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, social connection, and avoidance of risky substances to optimize health. Lifestyle medicine, when delivered with the health coach approach, can improve physical therapy outcomes and decrease the cost of healthcare for our patients. The personal practice of lifestyle medicine may also decrease health care provider burnout and improve well-being. In this course you will learn about lifestyle medicine and how you can apply the principles of health coaching in your practice to benefit your patients and yourself.

Course Objectives:

Following this course the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe lifestyle medicine
  2. Understand the 6 pillars of lifestyle medicine and application in the physical therapy setting
  3. Understand health coaching including the stages of change model and motivational interviewing and how this approach supports patient behavior change
  4. Explain how lifestyle medicine with health coaching can improve rehabilitation outcomes and decrease health care costs
  5. Understand personal application of lifestyle medicine

8:00 Welcome: introductions, course objectives, agenda, small group learning activity-explore participants’ expectations for course

8:15 Making the case for lifestyle medicine: health care costs, chronic lifestyle related disease burden, lifestyle medicine history, the potential for lifestyle medicine to change the current state of health care

9:00 What is lifestyle medicine? define practice, distinguish between other practices (including alternative, complementary, integrative medicine), describe the application of lifestyle medicine to physical therapy practice, discuss physical therapy scope of practice, discuss APTA official statements on physical therapy practice and wellness/prevention/health promotion and nutrition education

10:15 Describe and explore the six pillars of lifestyle medicine: discuss the evidence base and application to physical therapy practice for sleep, stress, substance use, social connections, nutrition, physical activity, individual learning activity-self assessment of personal and professional expertise in each pillar of lifestyle medicine

About the Speaker

Dr. Nola Peacock is an outpatient physical therapist and the Lifestyle Medicine Clinical Coordinator at St. John’s Health in Jackson, Wyoming. She is board-certified in geriatric physical therapy, board-certified health and wellness coach, and board-certified by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Nola serves on the steering committee of the APTA’s Council on Health Promotion and Wellness and is the Wyoming state advocate for ATPA Geriatrics. She has presented on the topic of lifestyle medicine in physical therapy at APTA Combined Sections meetings and annual meetings of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. In her clinical practice, Dr. Peacock specializes in the treatment and prevention of chronic, lifestyle-related conditions with physical therapy intervention and health coaching.
