1 hour CE, Category A
Course Description:
Patients commonly present to the orthopedic outpatient setting with complaints of headaches, cervicalgia, and pain in the jaw region. These patients can be challenging to the physical therapist that lacks the knowledge and expertise to evaluate and treat the symptom areas, anatomic culprit, and the contributing factors to this condition. Hands-on manual assessment, clinical reasoning, and a targeted approach are critical to successful management. The trigeminocervical nucleus in the lower brain ties the neck, head, and jaw together neurologically and helps us to understand why a dysfunctional neck can lead to jaw pain or headaches. Improving our understanding of this relationship and how we, as physical therapists, can focus continuing education coursework on neck and jaw will lead to successful management of these patients.
